Four-star Paul Wellens gores the Bulls but the Leon Pryce is right is for St Helens at Bradford Bulls

ST HELENS coach Mick Potter tipped stand-off Leon Pryce to have a successful season after witnessing his side run in six tries, three in each half.

Pryce, discarded by England for last autumn’s Four Nations tournament after a poor season with his club, had a hand in four of the tries against his former employers and was a constant menace.

“It was good to see Paul score four and Leon involved in a few,” said Potter.

“We know what they can do but doing it is a different proposition.

“Leon was at his best for the first time since some time last season. It is a challenge for him to produce it every week but I think he’s ready for a big season.”

The Australian was also happy to see his men banish the memories of their 32-12 opening-night defeat to Hull last weekend.

“It was a very good win, a comprehensive one,” he added.

“I thought how we played defensively was the most pleasing thing after last week. It always feels good to run in points and I think the players will get some confidence out of what they did, they know that they can do it.”

Meanwhile, Steve McNamara hopes his Bradford side will be better for their 38-6 defeat to St Helens, a result he referred to as a “tough day at the office”.

The Bulls, who have invested heavily in their side over the winter following a disappointing 2009 campaign which saw them fail to make the play-offs, were overpowered by the Saints, for whom Paul Wellens ran in four tries. The result leaves the Bulls bottom of the embryonic Engage Super League table following their loss to Huddersfield last weekend, but McNamara is refusing to panic just yet.

He said: “It was hugely disappointing. We were way off the mark, particularly in the first half. Saints were hot and Leon Pryce played as well as I have seen him play.

Maybe it was part of a process we need to go through as a group to get to where we want to get to.”
