Paul Smith says he’s had enough of taking on Liverpool boxers

"I have just been told I need to stop fighting people from the same city because I am trying too hard and doing too much.

"I’m not relaxing enough but there is a lot of pride there and I don’t want to lose to anyone, never mind a Scouser.

"I want to walk around this city, not in a cocky way, knowing I’m the best in my city at this weight.

“Tony Dodson and Tony Quigley can go and fight each other now and get their much talked about re-match on. I’ve beaten them, I’m top of the tree and still British champion.”

In many ways, it was roles reversed on Friday night as Smith threw with continuous bad intentions while Dodson adopted an ethos of boxing clever behind his left jab.

But as the ‘Garston Warrior’ willingly admitted post-fight, he threw caution to the wind less often than he ought to have in his usual rip roaring style.

Smith concluded: “I wasn’t really going to go out and box, I was always going to have a go at him and see what he had because I knew I had more than him.

“I felt all the blood coming down my head. My attitude is though, once I’m cut I don’t care how many times I get cut, I have got to win the fight and give everything I’ve got. I’ve got a lot of pride having that British title, I don’t want to lose it, and it’s going to take someone better than Tony Dodson to take it off me.”
