City of Liverpool gymnast Beth Tweddle gives her support to community centre scheme in memory of Rhys Jones

BETH TWEDDLE heads for Lilleshall this weekend to continue her preparations for next month’s European Championships in Birmingham.

The City of Liverpool gymnast will be up against the top talent from Romania and Germany in an international at the National Sports Centre.

Tweddle returned to full-time training at the start of the year after taking some time off following her gold medal winning heroics at the World Championships.

Now the 24-year-old is gunning to defend the European bars and floor titles she won in Milan.

“Training is going well and everything is geared towards the Europeans,” she said.

Tweddle was speaking at the launch of a fundraising dinner at Aintree in May for the Rhys Jones Memorial Fund.

She said: “Liverpool has been so welcoming to me and allowed me to achieve my sporting ambitions.

“Some people say kids are bad these days but they just need the opportunities that this community centre will give them – somewhere safe to try out new things and achieve their dreams.”
