WARRINGTON coach Tony Smith revealed that a visit from a wounded soldier provided the inspiration for his side’s emphatic 60-4 Carnegie Challenge Cup fifth-round win over Huddersfield.
Corporal Simon Brown, who suffered horrific facial injuries in the conflict in Afghanistan, gave a speech to the Wolves players during their preparations for the latest defence of their trophy.
“He came to speak to us in the week and I’d like to thank him for the inspiration he gave us,” said Smith.
England centre Chris Bridge scored five tries and winger Chris Hicks grabbed a hat-trick as the holders punished last year’s runners-up for a calamitous display.
The Wolves ran in 12 tries for the second successive match but Smith insisted his side had to work for the spoils.
“I don’t think it was easy,” he said. “We had to work really hard for it and execute real well.
Giants coach Nathan Brown admitted to being embarrassed by his side’s performance and says he faces a difficult task lifting them for their next match against Wigan.
“It’s definitely a sad day, the worst day in my short time at the Giants. Everyone’s embarrassed and devastated,” he said.
