Tom Stalker misses out on Euro gold

TOM STALKER landed a silver medal in the European Amateur Championships in Moscow, missing out on gold in a final defeat.

The lightweight Stalker put up a brave fight against Russia’s former world and European champion Albert Selimov, clawing back from 4-0 down in the first round to 4-3, but eventually losing 8-4.

Defeats for Stalker, Yafai, Iain Weaver and Tom Stalker saw Great Britain’s European Amateur Championship campaign end with a whimper in Moscow yesterday but there was glory for Ireland light-flyweight Paddy Barnes.

Britain had to settle for three silver medals to go with the bronzes won by Yafai’s brother Gamal and Welshman Andrew Selby on Saturday. Barnes’ victory gave Ireland their first gold medal at the tournament since 1991.

Beijing bronze medallist Barnes produced a superbly composed performance to defeat Azerbaijan’s Elvin Mamishzade 4-1 and take gold.
