Liverpool tennis star Ken Skupski sets his sights on first victory at Wimbledon

KEN SKUPSKI has his sights set on repeating the finest win of his career at Wimbledon this week.

Liverpool’s Davis Cup star was one half of the doubles pairing which beat the world’s number one ranked duo Bob and Mike Bryan at the AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club last summer. And Skupski and partner Colin Fleming have been drawn to face the formidable Americans again in this year’s second round.

First Skupski and Fleming must overcome Frenchmen Arnaud Clement and Nicolas Mahut in their first round clash, while the Bryan brothers try to dispose of Marco Chiudinelli of Switzerland and Bobby Reynolds of the USA.

The British pair go into Wimbledon in fine form.

They finished as runners-up in the men’s doubles at the AEGON International at Devonshire Park, Eastbourne last week, losing out in a very tight final against the number two seeds from Poland, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski.

“It was one match away from a perfect week,” said Skupski afterwards.

Fleming agreed, adding: “It was a tight match, they didn’t give us much rhythm.”

At the end of the match, after 134 points had been played, the Poles had only won four more than the British combination.

Fleming continued: “We’ve had three good weeks and we’ve got a tough draw at Wimbledon. We’re also ready to do our bit in the Davis Cup if we get picked.”

If selected, the pair will be back on the grass courts of Eastbourne, straight after Wimbledon finishes as AEGON Team GB take on Turkey at Devonshire Park from July 9-11.

Skupski is delighted to be going into Wimbledon ranked as one of the world’s top 50 doubles players.

The lefthander, who is ranked 49 as an individual, and his partner Scotland’s Colin Fleming are currently ranked 37th in the world as a team.
