Cullen’s Widnes exhibit demolition job on Whitehaven

WIDNES got their Co-operative Championship play-off bid back on track by easing to a seven-try win at struggling Whitehaven.

Dave Allen got the Vikings off to a fine start with two first-half touchdowns either side of a Shane Grady effort.

Grady claimed a second after the break while Kirk Netherton, Lee Doran and Richard Varkulis also crossed on a wet night.

Whitehaven, who have now lost 10 in succession, claimed their only points with a Derry Eilbeck try late in the first half.

Seven tries to one tells its own story as the Vikings forced their way into the play-off picture.

The first scrum of the match broke up into a punch-up with Whitehave deemed to be the main culprits.

From the resulting pressure the Vikings took the lead when skipper Dave Allen latched onto Thomas Coyle's short-kick to plunge over.

Shane Grady converted and was on target again to add the extras from his own touchdown which came from a smart Lee Doran offload.

On 22 minutes all looked rosy for Widnes when Allen crashed in again from close range for another six-pointer to make it 18-0.

Whitehaven’s Derry Eilbeck pulled four points bac but Paul Cullen's men got off to the perfect start in the second half when substitute Kirk Netherton dummied in.

On 49 minutes Coyle sent second row dancing over from 10 metres out to establish a 28-4 advantagebefore Grady went in for his second try.

A crosskick from Anthony Thackeray set up the next score with a superb piece of quick-hands from Doran putting Richard Varkulis over with young sub Danny Craven adding the extras to put Widnes out of sight at 40-4.

Haven's attempts to register a late consolation came to nothing.
