Latest action from the Liverpool Competition Second Division

MANY new clubs would be content to find their feet in a new league before thinking about promotion but Alder are already putting the pressure on the leading clubs in the Second Division.

Muhammad Masroor's side recorded their sixth win in 10 games on Saturday when they beat Birkenhead St Mary's by 92 runs and clearly have their eyes on a First Division spot in 2011.

Mark Brick (60) helped the Sandfield Park side to post 177 in 55 overs and then Masroor took over, bagging 5-40 as the Birkenhead side could muster only 85 all out in reply.

But Alder must match the form of the St Helens duo if they are to achieve their aim.

On Saturday, Recs swept an apparently powerful Burscough team aside at Ruskin Drive, winning by seven wickets in a contest which lasted only 44 overs. Nazir Mohammed took 6-40 and Gary Freeman 3-20 as Lee Berrie's men were all out for 78 in 28.4. The leaders then knocked the runs off in 15.2 overs, Daron Cruickshank hitting 21.

At Parkfield Liscard, St Helens cemented their second place with a seven-wicket win. Sri Lankan professional Mattheesha Ranasinghe weighed in with 7-32 as Nigel Jackson's men were bowled out for just 110 and then Chris Woods's 54 helped Bob Kenny's men knock the runs off in short order.

At The Rookery, Southport Trinity's Wim van der Walt ensured that Southport Trinity's improvement continued against Sutton. Van der Walt's 60 and Geoff Thornton's 56 sealed Trinity's seven-wicket win over Gary Greener's side. Aussie seamer Ben Jackson (4-43) helped to dismiss Sutton for 168.

Jason Cooper took 5-47 as Caldy beat Ainsdale by seven wickets, Sunil Gandhi's 57 not out exposing the inadequacy of the 124 all out posted by Ian Cropper's batsmen.

Miguel Cummins claimed any man of the match awards on offer in Wavertree's 15-run defeat of Moorfield. The Barbadian scored 69 in his side's 177 all out and took 4-34 as Moorfield fell just short on 162.
