Ken Skupski helped Great Britain to their first Davis Cup win in nearly three years

GREAT BRITAIN proved they weren’t total turkeys in the Davis Cup as they claimed their first victory for almost three years.

And it was Liverpool’s Ken Skupski together with doubles partner Colin Fleming who fired the Brits into an unassailable 3-0 lead against Turkey in their Eastbourne showdown.

The pair saw off Haluk Akkoyun and Ergun Zorlu 6-3 6-4 6-4 to seal a comfortable victory after singles wins for James Ward and Jamie Baker on Friday.

And Britain’s success has saved them from the humiliation of dropping out of Europe/Africa Zone Group II into the bottom tier of world tennis.

Afterwards Skupski tweeted on his website: “One of the best feelings I’ve ever had in my sporting career!

“Clinching a Davis Cup tie is special and very addictive!

“Well done boys!!”

Fleming and Skupski have made rapid progress since their breakthrough last year and already have two ATP World Tour titles to their name.

Team captain Leon Smith added: “It gives you great confidence having that doubles team.

“You know that on Saturday you’ve got a great chance of getting a result with these guys.”

Smith added that Wimbledon semi-finalist Andy Murray’s attitude to the competition does not risk jeopardising the team’s new-found confidence.

The British number one again chose to skip the tie with Turkey, having also missed the defeat by Lithuania in March, which put the team in danger of being relegated to the lowest tier of the competition.
