WIDNES VIKINGS cemented their play-off place after they put in a spirited performance to despatch Sheffield Eagles.
It was a difficult night all round for Widnes as it was the first game since the death of 48-year-old Chris Cullen, wife of Vikings coach Paul.
A minute’s silence was held in her memory before the players made sure they finished in the top six with two games remaining.
The Vikings led 12-4 at half-time thanks to tries from Dean Gaskell and Chris Gerrard, both converted by Danny Craven.
Sheffield did go over for a neat Dave Bergin try five minutes before half-time but Anthony Thackeray crossed for a solo effort before Misili Talaupapa put Sheffield back in contention.
Sheffield threw everything at Widnes but a try from Craven on 66 minutes sealed it. Gerrard had the final word eight minutes from time.
