Leigh close to clinching Liverpool Competition first division title

LEIGH are on the verge of clinching the First Division title after a 94-run win at home to bottom club Skelmersdale.

Thomas Foster (71) and Alex Roussak (45) shared a third-wicket stand of 111 in Leigh's 200-9 declared off 52.5 overs. James Cutt hampered the leaders' progress with 5-70.

Skem could only muster 106 in reply with Richard Dempster taking 4-20 and Matthew McKiernan 3-13.

Fourth placed Sefton Park kept themselves in the race for the second promotion place with a comfortable eight-wicket win at home to Formby.

Skipper Robbie Houghton (5-37) claimed his second five-wicket haul of the Bank Holiday weekend and Matt Pownall chipped in with 3-30 to dismiss Formby for 149 off 48.1 overs. Laurence Armstrong top scored with 44.

Sefton clinched victory in the 28th over of their reply with Sean Vandome hitting 64 and Rashidi Boucher unbeaten on 35 off just 15 balls.

Peter Manser returned stunning figures of 8-29 but ended up on the losing side as Wigan enjoyed a 26-run win at home to Orrell Red Triangle, who slip to fifth.

Manser's heroics limited Wigan to 115 all out off 41.4 overs with Aaron Redmond making 42. However, his efforts were in vain as Mark Shorrocks (4-38) and Phil Armstrong (3-37) combined to dismiss Orrell for 89.

Rainford remain second despite a seven-wicket defeat at Maghull. Pravin Tambe struck 90 but Chris Tonge (3-46) and Liam Crilly (3-60) limited Rainford to 197-9 declared off 53.3 overs.

Maghull took 46.2 overs to knock off the runs with Shane Townsend (96no) and Paul Walters (62no) sharing an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 156.
