Centurions on their guard for Championship elimination play-off

LEIGH CENTURIONS’ Super League hopes will be on the line when they meet Sheffield Eagles in the Co-operative Championship elimination play-off at the Leigh Sports Village tonight.

After failing to win the Northern Rail Cup, Ian Millward’s men must reach the Grand Final later this month to meet the minimum requirements needed to apply for a Super League licence for 2012.

The Centurions will be without dual-registered pair Lee Mitchell (Warrington) and Jacob Emmett (St Helens), who have been recalled by their Super League clubs, as well as Tommy Goulden, who is on his honeymoon.

However, Millward is able to call on Warrington’s Matty Blythe and Tyrone McCarthy, while Sheffield are boosted by the decision of Papua New Guinea centre Menzie Yere to commit himself to a new three-year contract.

The winners will face the team that emerges victorious form Sunday’s Barrow v Widnes clash.
