Stephen Smith ready to hand John Simpson boxing lesson in Commonwealth title fight

STEPHEN SMITH admits to learning new tricks in the build up to his fight with John Simpson - but now says it is time for him to hand out the boxing lessons.

The undefeated featherweight challenges the experienced Scot for his Commonwealth title tomorrow night in Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall.

Smith’s bout with Simpson (21-6) also doubles as an eliminator for a crack at Martin Lindsay’s British belt with the Liverpool puncher relishing the added incentive.

But former top amateur star Smith (10-0) is refusing to look beyond the threat of Simpson though believes he has too much for holder to handle on the night

“I feel great and can’t wait to get into the ring and show my stuff”, buzzed Smith.

“All the hard work is over with now so I’ll just relax today after the weigh in and watch a few films.

“I’ve certainly got more of a game plan in this fight than I ever have done before.

“I’ve seen a lot of John’s fights and know what he brings to the table.

“In my amateur days we’d work on different styles but never to a specific fighter because you don’t get the same notice as you do in the pros. I’ve really enjoyed going back and learning new things.”

Some boxing commentators have suggested Simpson’s knack of dragging opponents into a trade-off will prove the downfall of the younger Smith.

But the 25-year-old former Rotunda ABC man has rubbished the idea and says the Commonwealth title holder is the perfect fit for his slick approach.

“His style is made for me and I’m better in every department”, Smith added.

“ I’ve got the bigger boxing brain. I will surprise him with this and with my strength.

“I’m a lot better than anyone he has ever fought and though he’ll try and take me into the trenches, when I keep catching him with hurtful punches he’ll want to stay out of trouble.

“That the fight also acts as the eliminator for a shot at the British title is a massive incentive but I am not for one minute looking past John.”

Stephen’s younger brother Liam, an unbeaten welterweight (5-0), also features on the Sky Sports undercard.
