Tony Bellew defends Commonwealth crown in London

HEAVY HANDED Tony Bellew is out to destroy rival Danny McInotsh en route to domestic glory - but must first defend his Commonwealth crown.

The Liverpool light-heavyweight faces Darlington’s Bob Ajisafe tonight on promoter Frank Warren’s annual DeBRA charity show at Grosvenor House Hotel in London, predicting yet another early finish.

Bellew swept aside the wild Atoli Moore to win the vacant belt in March at the Echo Arena and is eyeing a problem-free defence before stepping up for the British title.

Though currently held by Nathan Cleverley, the Welshman is likely to vacate the strap as he goes in search of world honours, leaving the path clear for the ‘Wavertree Bomber’ to add the Lonsdale Belt to his collection - on the undercard of Paul Smith title defence next month.

The 27-year-old expects the left handed Ajisafe (8-1) to lay it on the line but even though he can boast of a victory over Ovill McKenzie, Bellew is adamant he is streets ahead and will vanquish his opponent before the half-way mark of their 12 round clash.

Adding another stoppage to his 13-0 pro slate will only increase Bellew’s chances of fighting for the domestic belt and the Liverpool man is desperate to defend his fellow Scousers’ good name after claims of McIntosh making insulting comments.

“Ajisafe is an Ingle fighter so comes to win but he’s not anything I haven’t seen before so I’ll beat him down”, said Bellew.

“He’s is an awkward southpaw, is as good as unbeaten and has proved himself a hard fighter but this game is all about levels, and I am several levels above him.

“I would love to fight for the British title in October and spoke to Frank over the weekend about it. It is a big possibility if Cleverly vacates and goes for the world title. If the opportunity comes then I’m ready to go.
