Liverpool St Helens stun high-flying Vale of Lune

VALE OF LUNE 13 LIVERPOOL ST HELENS 26

LIVERPOOL St Helens shocked previously unbeaten Vale of Lune with a superb display in North One West.

Playing with a devastating intensity they outfought, outthought, outtackled, outran and outplayed the Lancaster outfit.

On a day when everyone stood up to be counted there was an impressive first appearance from Mark Wilcox at number 8; a controlling performance from Martin Gambles at scrum half; a masterclass of kicking from Greg Smith and a colossal display from centre Dave Cunliffe.

A Smith penalty after four minutes was levelled by Foster before LSH took control of the game.

Another Smith penalty was followed by two identical tries from Wilcox and Smith in the 34th and 39th minutes, both from 60 yards out, both beating men and running in under the posts and both converted to give LSH a 20-3 lead.

Vale rallied in the third quarter with tries from Owens and Perry to put the game in the balance.

However, LSH asserted again and were settled down by two more penalties from Smith, bringing his personal tally to 21 points and securing a deserved win for the Moss Laners.
