Waterloo penalties concern Jan Van Deventer

WATERLOO director of rugby Jan Van Deventer expressed concern at the penalty count of about 35 at the end of the game after his side had lost 52-17 at home to Darlington Mowden Park last Saturday.

“We would have lost anyway but I think the penalty count against us certainly affected the size of the scoreline,” he said.

“We have been averaging six per game so I want to know where our 22 came from.”

Indeed Waterloo were so heavily penalised in the opening quarter that Darlington Mowden Park were 21 points up before the home side got anywhere near the scoresheet.

“From there we were always playing catch-up and although I don’t think it was one of our better afternoon’s work we deserved better.”

Yet although disappointed Daventer was keen to look at the positives and the progress his side has made over the past month.

He added: “We set a target for October of 12 points, we have taken 11 so on that basis I think we are moving in the right direction. There has been steady improvement.”
