Denis Betts joins Widnes Vikings as new head coach as Paul Cullen becomes director of rugby

DENIS BETTS, the former Wigan Warriors boss, has been appointed as the new Widnes Vikings head coach, replacing Paul Cullen who has moved upstairs.

The Vikings moved swiftly to announce the two appointments as the Liverpool Daily Post exclusively revealed yesterday.

Vikings Owner, Steve O’Connor, hinted that the management reshuffle is yet another sign of the Co-operative Club gearing up for Super League in 2012, should they win a license.

He said: “The board and I are delighted that Paul has agreed to become our first director of rugby and we are equally delighted that Denis Betts has agreed to join us as our head coach. The role of director of rugby is to ensure that we work hard in a strategic fashion in every aspect of our rugby operations, and have a consistent coaching policy across all our teams.

“I am confident that Paul Cullen has the experience to make a success of this new role and that he will play an important part in the future of our club. Denis Betts has considerable experience of coaching at a senior level with both Wigan Warriors and Gloucester RUFC and his decision to join the Vikings is a symbol of our determination to return to Super League and build a team of the highest quality.”

Cullen’s assistant Stuart Wilkinson has resigned as Assistant Coach following the appointment of Betts.
