LOUGHBOROUGH Students edged a close game at Paton Field that could have been snatched by the home side late on as Caldy piled on the pressure but were unable to convert it into a try.
Loughborough started the game well and raced into a 15-0 lead via tries from Tom Hobbs and Ed Rolston and a conversion and penalty from George Drake.
Caldy hit back with a try from Dan Rowlands converted by Richard Vasey who then booted over a penalty before the interval.
Caldy took a deserved lead on 50 minutes when a flowing backs move saw Shaun Woof lob a ball over the would-be defenders to Craig Ross who powered over. Vasey converted again. Loughborough then found another gear and Mike Macfarlane scored a try. Rolston tacked on the extras. Loughborough centre Chris Kinloch found space out wide to touch down but Rolston missed the conversion.
A period of pressure from Caldy saw Vasey score a try and he then converted his own score to bring the match close. Caldy bossed the final stages and were unlucky not to score again.
