Liverpool Harriers’ Richard Burney bags second in gruelling Parbold Hill race

RICHARD BURNEY was second out of a 467-strong field in the gruelling Parbold Hill Race.

The Liverpool Harrier was edged out by Altrincham’s Nick Leigh as he clocked 40:57. Fellow Harrier Adam Peers was third in 41:18 with clubmates Glen Groves (5th, 42:58) and Alan Ashton (8th, 43:37) also making the top 10.

St Helens Sutton’s Tony Smith (43:19) was seventh and Wirral AC’s John Hunt (44:14) was ninth.

Liverpool Pembroke Sefton’s Chris Pedder took the over 50 prize for 13th place in 46:21.

Liverpool Harriers’ Jonny Mellor and Matt Clowes ran in the Armagh International 5km. Mellor clocked 14:16 for second, while Clowes was ninth in 14:29. Sophie Whiteside competed in the women’s race and ran a 3km PB of 10:36 for 15th spot.

Southport Waterloo’s senior men are closing in on the Mid Lancs Cross Country League title after victory over Barrow in Blackpool.

James Tartt (33:56) was their top finisher in seventh with Joe Vis (9th, 34:04), Michael Evans (10th, 34:06), Ben Johnson (14th, 34:41), Richard Shearer (16th, 34:48) and Steve Wilkinson (18th, 34:52) close behind.

In the youth races there were second places for Harriers duo Emily Gray (u-11 girls) and Molly Thomson (u-13 girls).

Fellow Harriers Owen Sharpe and Paul Tyson were second and third in the under-15 boys race, while Liverpool Pembroke Sefton’s Jack Crook was third in the under-13 boys.

Harriers’ Jack Christie won the under-17 boys event with clubmate Luke Tower in third spot.

The final fixture is on March 12.

Steve Crowe was first home for Ellesmere Port in the fourth Borders League race at Christleton as he was sixth in 31:30. The club’s men’s team finished third in Division One.
