West Park RUFC show good spirit but lose to Wilmslow

MONOPOLISING possession from the start, Wilmslow were 10 points up in as many minutes.

Fly-half Bob McCallum landed a penalty and converted a try by right-wing Elliot Brearley as the West Park defence left a huge gap.

Park were unable to hold the ball long enough to launch any semblance of attack but profited from some wayward passing by the visitors’ backs. Chris Fortune intercepted and outpaced the pursuit but Warren Hunt’s conversion attempt was charged down.

A rare strike against the head saw Liam Tai Hogan level the scores with an unconverted try.

Wilmslow number eight, Mike Clifford, shrugged off four tackles to regain the lead. MacCallum converted and added a penalty but another interception, this time by centre John James, kept Park in the game at the change-around.

Wilmslow, though, dominated play on the resumption, forging ahead with two tries both converted and seemed out of sight at 34-17.

However, a spirited rally by Park saw Fortune score his second try. Hunt converted to give Park a four try bonus point, their first of the year.

A late try, though, by left-wing Tom Rayner put Wilmslow out of reach.
