Snooker: Tributes paid to commentary great Ted Lowe

COMMENTATOR Ted Lowe was last night hailed as ‘one of the BBC greats’ after his death at the age of 90.

Lowe, who became as integral to the snooker boom years as the great players, worked for the BBC for 50 years.

His distinctive, hushed growl became a familiar voice in households throughout the country.

John Virgo, who went from playing to a TV presenting career before making the commentary box his regular home, said: “He set a standard for us all.

“He had an impish sense of humour and while cricket had its John Arlott, Wimbledon had its Dan Maskell, we had Ted Lowe.

“He was one of the BBC greats.”

Lowe’s widow Jean, to whom he had been married for 21 years, said: “He had been poorly for the last 10 weeks and had been in a hospice for the last week. For two days I never left his side, but I could see he was slowly going.

“He still loved snooker and was watching it on TV this week.”

Dennis Taylor said: “No praise is high enough, I had such great times with him.”
