LIVERPOOL will be announced as a stop-off point for the Olympic torch relay next year.

The city is among 66 locations in the United Kingdom that will welcome the Olympic flame.

The iconic symbol is set to arrive in the city on Friday 1 June next year, and plans are underway for a special evening celebration event to take place at the Pier Head to mark the unique occasion.

The event will culminate with a cauldron being lit from the Olympic flame.

Today the London 2012 Olympics Organising Committee will unveil its plans for the flame upon its arrival in the UK next year. It is also hoped that Chester will form part of the plans.

Three times World Champion gymnast Beth Tweddle and Liverpool council leader Joe Anderson will be part of an announcement at the Pier Head later today.

Cllr Anderson said: “Liverpool is a city world-renowned for its sporting prowess and it’s fitting we have been selected to take part in this prestigious event.
