Lisicki wins to shake up Hantuchova

UNSEEDED German Sabine Lisicki upset the odds again as she lifted the AEGON Classic title in Birmingham.

Lisicki had already toppled the third seed Shuai Peng of China to reach the final in the midlands.

And she continued her good run by overpowering Daniela Hantuchova, seeded fourth, 6-3 6-2 in the rain-delayed final.

The 21-year-old, currently ranked 100th in the world, broke Hantuchova once in the opening set and then twice again to seal her second WTA Tour title.

Lisicki, who dropped out of the top 200 after an ankle injury last year, was delighted with the victory.

She said: “I’m in disbelief – I’m shaking. It’s an amazing week. At the start of it I never thought I would be standing here today.

“The comeback from injury was so difficult, it means so much to me. There were so many doubters, and so much stuff coming from the sidelines that I wouldn’t get there. So I had this tunnel vision about getting back. I always thought I would.”

The German found out at the weekend she had been awarded a wild card for this year’s Wimbledon, meaning she can now rest until the tournament begins.

“If I hadn’t been given the wild card, I would have been playing the qualifying tomorrow and it will be very helpful to be able to rest for a couple of days instead. But I don’t want to put pressure on myself,” she added.
