Recovering Jo Leedham gets back to basics

STAR guard Jo Leedham from Ellesmere Port is confident Great Britain can right the ship before the European Championships for Women start in Poland this weekend.

Tom Maher’s squad have lost six of their nine warm-up games ahead of their first ever EuroBasket Women appearance, losing 74-50 to Latvia on Thursday and then going down 65-54 to Slovakia a day later. With only a few days left until the opening game against Belarus on Saturday, Leedham believes there is still time to turn things around.

“We’ve not had the best results, but we have to learn from it,” she said.

“We have to move forward and progress. In some ways, we’ve had to take a step back to go forward from where we were.

“We’ve been working a lot on basic things, like communication on the court. We’ve been having a lot of defensive breakdowns, and we couldn’t get things going on the offence.”

Leedham started both games last week despite having been out with the injury that had threatened the career of the former WNBA draft pick.

The 23-year-old is also expected to start the final warm-up game against Slovakia today.

“I feel fine,” she said. “I’m not really concerned about myself right now. I just want to do what I can to help the team.”
