DEFEATED young British hopeful Heather Watson broke down in tears in her post match press conference last night – but Laura Robson beat Germany’s Angelique Kerber 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 to reach the second round.
The 19-year-old lost in three sets after struggling with an elbow injury.
Watson, British number three, lost the deciding set against Mathilde Johannsson and heavily criticised herself in front of reporters at SW19.
With no visible warning of being deeply upset, she broke down and sobbed.
She ignored a press officer’s offer of halting the interview and chose to continue taking journalists’ questions.
She was her own harshest critic saying: “I just feel like there’s no excuses now.
“I know how to play tennis. This is what I prepare for.
“This is why I play tennis every day, so I should be ready.”
Robson defied the odds to complete a stunning victory over German Kerber and set up a showdown with the Wimbledon title favourite Maria Sharapova.
Robson won her first women’s singles match at the All England Club at the third time of asking, beating a player positioned 177 places higher than her in the world rankings to progress into the second round.
The 17-year-old – a junior Wimbledon champion in 2008 – took two hours and eight minutes to overcome 77th-ranked Kerber 4-6 7-6 (7/4) 6-3 on Court 16.
