KATARINA THOMPSON’S consistent flow of medals shows no sign of abating after she departed the Aviva Under-20 Championship with a triple.
The crowd at the Bedford event watched on as the 18-year-old completed her most successful UK Championship to date, walking away with gold medals in long jump and hurdles competition, whilst adding a silver medal in the high jump.
A rising Heptathlon star, Thompson had already achieved qualification for the European Junior Championships to be held in Estonia next month – a feat most others at the event were scrapping to achieve – and the freedom to focus on simply delivering medals certainly seemed to allow the Liverpool Harrier to flourish.
Focusing on three events as opposed to her traditional seven may have typically given Thompson an easy day at the office but the timing of each competition on the day saw the youngster performing in the long lump competition between heats in the 100 metre hurdles and even marking out her run-up for the long jump in between jumps during high jump battle.
Thompson showed the type of fight which dragged her back from a year on the sidelines with a knee injury to snatch long jump honours from City of Stoke athlete Jazmin Sawyers. Trumped by her rival’s final 6.23m leap with only one jump to spare, Thompson flew to a 6.44m PB to top the podium and she admitted she was confident of pulling a key jump out of the bag as a result of her previous offerings on the day.
Comfortable 100m hurdle success would quickly follow long jump glory as Thompson showed competition experience to lift her 14.09 second performance in heats to a 13.90 clocking in the final, securing victory over Derby’s Yasmin Miller.
