City of Liverpool gymnasts Beth Tweddle and Hannah Whelan star at British Championships

BETH TWEDDLE claimed double gold at the British Championships in Liverpool yesterday with Hannah Whelan adding two silver medals to the all-around title she secured on Saturday.

Tweddle, reigning world and European champion on the uneven bars, proved unbeatable on the same apparatus yesterday, scoring a stunning 15.200 for her routine to finish ahead of Whelan (13.900) and Jenni Pinches (13.500).

The City of Liverpool gymnast added a further gold for her floor routine, which scored 15.250, to beat off the challenges of Niamh Rippin and Pinches.

Whelan, also performing in front of her home crowd, had to settle for a silver on the beam behind Danusia Francis, who finished runner-up to the City of Liverpool competitor in the all-around event on Saturday.

Imogen Cairns took bronze on the beam, but fared much better on the vault where she came away with gold.

Whelan successfully defended her senior all-around title at the Women’s British Championships on Saturday in front of her home crowd in Liverpool.

Impressive scores of 14.750 on the beam and 14.600 on the floor helped clinch gold for the City of Liverpool gymnast, who finished with an overall score of 56.350.

Whelan was three marks ahead of the field, with Francis (53.150) second and Pinches (52.850) completing the trio on the podium.

“The atmosphere was really great in the arena and everybody was cheering each other on,” Whelan said.

“To be crowned British champion again is a huge honour for me, especially in Liverpool with such great support.”

Rebecca Tunney, another City of Liverpool gymnast, claimed the junior title ahead of Gabrielle Jupp and Abi Caig.
