Leon Pryce to return to St Helens squad for clash against Catalans Dragons

ST HELENS stand-off Leon Pryce is set to make only his second appearance of the season in tomorrow’s home match against Catalan Dragons, the club he is tipped to join next year.

The 29-year-old Great Britain international missed the start of the season with a neck problem that also forced him to sit out last October’s Grand Final and he picked up a groin injury five minutes into his comeback, coincidentally against the Dragons, in Perpignan in March.

“Leon’s had three tough conditioning sessions this week,” said Saints coach Royce Simmons.

“He’ll be in the 17 but he won’t be in the starting line-up. He’ll be our back sub and I’ll try to edge him back into the game if possible.”

Pryce is out of contract at the end of the year and the Catalans are thought to be among several clubs showing an interest but he needs to prove his fitness first.

With Simmons sticking with youngsters Jonny Lomax and Lee Gaskell at half-back, Pryce could find himself sharing the full-back role with another specialist stand-off, Kyle Eastmond, with Paul Wellens failing to recover from an Achilles injury.

St Helens are also without Paul Clough, who picked up an ankle injury on his comeback from a three-month lay-off with a shoulder problem in Sunday’s 46-6 win at Wakefield.
