Alberto Contador’s doping hearing postponed until November

THE Court of Arbitration for Sport have confirmed Alberto Contador’s doping case, due to be heard next week, has again been rescheduled and will likely take place in November.

Contador learned in May that he would be free to defend his Tour de France title after the CAS announced the case would not be heard until after the race, which concluded on Sunday.

The 28-year-old Spaniard is waiting to discover whether the CAS will overturn a Spanish cycling federation decision to clear him of any wrongdoing following a positive test for clenbuterol at the 2010 Tour.

He will have to wait a little longer, though, after the CAS issued a statement which read: “In the arbitration between the International Cycling Union (UCI) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and Alberto Contador and the Spanish Cycling Federation (RFEC), the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has allowed a request for a second exchange of written submissions between the parties as well as for a new procedural calendar.

“Such request was formulated by WADA with the unanimous agreement of the three other parties.

“As a consequence of the parties’ request, the hearing which was scheduled for 1, 2 and 3 August 2011 is cancelled and will be rescheduled for new dates, probably in November 2011.

“The second round of written submissions will allow the parties to complete their evidence and arguments relating to some specific scientific issues.”
