JENNIFER PYBIS produced a rock solid run at the URENCO Capenhurst 5k on a night when the region’s old guard showed they could still deliver the goods.
Pybis – a newcomer to the sport in comparison to others who shone on the night – produced her second quickest outing over the distance to finish second in the women’s race behind Emma Parry (18:11) of Wrexham.
A time of 18:23 wasn’t enough to secure victory for the 24-year-old Liverpool Harrier but enough to show progress in her year on year capabilities over the distance.
In men’s action, it was all about the old guard as a spate of hardened veterans and seniors from around the North-West locked horns with a handful of promising young upstarts.
Peter Butler of Oswestry Olympians proved there’s no substitute for experience as he took the spoils in 15:47 and Liverpool Harrier Alan Ashton carried Merseyside’s fight for a place on the podium only to fall short of third place by a solitary second (16:06).
Excellent runs from Oliver Park of Warrington AC (16:15) and Glen Groves of Liverpool Harriers (16:42) earned the pair places in the top ten and an excellent run by Paul Quine (17:11) brought him victory in the Veterans Over-50 category.
