Rowing: Britain lands 14 gold medals in World Championships

THE medals continued to stack up for Great Britain on the final day of competition at the World Championships in Slovenia.

Olympic champions Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter successfully defended their lightweight men’s double scull, while the men’s four of Alex Gregory, Ric Egington, Tom James and Matt Langridge also won gold.

There was a bronze medal for Hester Goodsell and Sophie Hosking in the lightweight women’s double scull, and a gold for the Paralympic-class mixed adaptive coxed four.

That brought the overall GB medal tally to 14, good enough to top the table.

The Olympic classes delivered three golds, three silvers and four bronzes, while the international classes and the Paralympic classes also delivered two golds apiece.

GB’s performance director David Tanner hailed the medal return as “outstanding”, but was eager to sound a note of caution against complacency creeping in ahead of Olympic year.

“Today has obviously been completely outstanding,” said Tanner.

“If we wanted cream on our cake here, this was the day.

“But we must not get carried away. Yes, we’ve had a good event with some truly exceptional performances of which we can be proud but so, too, have Germany and New Zealand.

“We need to keep our feet on the ground.

“We need to go into the Olympic year with confidence but not thinking somehow we are going to have a gift because it is London.”

Certainly the competition was fierce as Purchase and Hunter took gold in the lightweight double scull.

“After our race with the Kiwis in the quarters we knew it would be a tough race today,” said Purchase.

Hunter added: “We knew we had to be in touch with the Kiwis. We didn’t worry about where they were. We knew we were in the pack.”
