ANSELMIANS got off to a good start and had most of the possession, but on their first visit to the Anselmians’ 22, Aspatria managed to go over in the corner and take 5-0 lead.
Six minutes later the visitors bounced back after the forwards set up a good platform. Centre Simione Mafi took the ball at pace and jumped over a pile of bodies to score.
The weather conditions did not help kicking but it was the returning Simon Mason who struck a penalty to give Anselmians the lead.
They had plenty of opportunities in that first half to nail the result but squandered chances in the red zone would cost them.
Deep into injury time the hosts equalised via a penalty for offside.
A swirling high wind in the second-half made passing the ball something of a difficult task.
There was an exchange of penalties early in the second period and with the score at 11-11 both sides were desperately defending and trying not to give away silly penalties.
However, it was the visitors who took the lead on 67 minutes and Mason slotted the ball over from in front of the posts.
Anselmians defended well for the rest of the half and they thought they had their first away win under their belts but cruelly after 10 minutes of added time the referee awarded a penalty for speaking out of turn. Aspatria converted the penalty and the whistle then went for the end of the game and a draw at 14 points apiece.
THERE were mixed fortunes for Collegiate.
The 1st XV were edged out 17-7 by second-placed Bowdon. Skipper Joe Callaghan-Adnams crossed following some superb play.
The second XV came away 13-12 to the good in a tough encounter at Bowdon to remain second in Division 3 North.
The 3rd XV recorded their second successive victory by 19-10 at Formby Vikings. The 4th XV were on the end of a 24-7 reverse against Widnes.
