Coach criticises Waterloo’s lack of effort and leadership

FROM the euphoria of the previous week to utter dross last Saturday as Waterloo’s the game against Altrincham Kersal was without doubt their worst performance of the season so far.

Despite leading 14-12 at half-time the Blundellsands club were never really in this game and as coach Jan Deventer (pictured) intimated, some serious talking needs to be done this week as to why, after promising so much with the defeat of Birkenhead Park, they turned in such an abject performance against a side where points should have been racked up.

“There was a total lack of effort and leadership on the field particularly behind the scrum where the set piece had gone,” said Deventer stated. “The core axis of 8, 9, 10 were unable to exert any form of control. I could say that there were too many wrong decisions but the plain truth is that they rarely made any decisions anyway. ‘AK’ are not a good side but we were so poor that we didn’t even make them look good.”

“We have no-one to blame but ourselves for this defeat but there is still a long way to go and we have just got to get up and get on with it.”

Waterloo are at home to bottom club Beverley and the kick off at Bundellsands is at 2.30pm.
