Caldy a club in mourning after death of legend Porky

THIS has been one of the most upsetting weeks in the recent history of Caldy RUFC as the club mourns the loss of its biggest character Sion “Porky” Williams, who died in the early hours on October 30, aged 40.

Porky was a formidable player in his day and since his retirement has worked tirelessly in the name of Caldy RUFC as a coach, supporter and ambassador for the club. Sion leaves behind his wife Helen and his two boys Tomas and Harri. His family and friends will pay tribute to his life at Caldy Rugby Club today at 2pm.

As a mark of respect his friends and family will be returning to the club on Saturday for the home match against Westoe, a game which Sion’s family and close friends are sponsoring in his honour, kick-off 2.15pm.

Director of rugby Simon Wright said: “The last two weeks at Caldy RFC have been very difficult following the untimely death of undoubtedly one of the biggest characters at the club and probably that I have ever met. Sion Williams or ‘Porky’ as everybody called him will be sorely missed by everybody who knew him and our hearts and thoughts go out to his family and especially to his wife Helen and his two sons Tomas and Harri.

“He will leave a space at the club that nobody will be able to fill.

“Porky was due to sponsor today’s game and we are expecting the biggest crowd of the season to pay tribute to the man, the myth and one of Caldy’s legends.”

Ahead of this weekend’s game head coach Stuart Turner said: “Last weekend, we played well in patches, particularly when we played simple high pace rugby. Bromsgrove were physical and committed and forced some individual errors at crucial times, and in the end deserved their win. Westoe, this weekend, are a good side, with a good scrum and a physical presence at the breakdown. In the last few years we have had some tough battles with them, and I expect another this weekend. I expect them to be in the top third of the table.

“This will be an emotional weekend for the entire club as Sion played such a huge role in the rugby club. We will all miss him.”
