BIRKENHEAD PARK suffered another setback in National Three North as they lost their first match at league newcomers Burnage.
Burnage had the upper hand for much of the game, displaying a direct approach which Park found difficult to match. Park skipper Chris Jones was sidelined through injury and the cause was not helped by injuries to Gavin Scott and Matt Ibbotson. In the absence of Jones and Chris Tymms, Martin O’Keefe took an emergency hooking role and Steve Lowry impressed on the wing after a reshuffle following the injury to Scott. Dave Ibbotson and Jack Ashcroft competed strongly in the back row and Shaun Ingram also acquitted himself well at scrum half.
Team manager George Pollock said: “It was a disappointing afternoon and our defence was found wanting for at least two of their tries. It is definitely an area we will need to tighten up on before our next match. “ Park did mange a well worked try by Colin Campbell but it was a rare highlight for the visitors.
There is a break in the National Three North programme this week and the Park Wanderers take centre stage. The Wanderers lead the University of Salford Division One and they defeated Leigh on Saturday 53-7. This week they entertain arch rivals Waterloo , kick-off at the Upper Park is 2.15pm.
