Wands weave their magic over Loo

THERE was a break in the National Three North programme on Saturday but the Birkenhead Park Wanderers were in action in the University of Salford Division One against Waterloo.

The Wanderers gained a hard-earned 24-15 victory and maintained top spot in the table having just lost once to second-placed Wilmslow who are seven points behind.

Another success story so far this season is the continuing rise of the Birkenhead Ladies team the Park Panthers who proudly sit at the top of RFUW North Two.

The Panthers are spreading their reputation across the North having won at Morpeth and recently at Vagabonds in the Isle of Man.

The Panthers did taste defeat at Eccles which was their first loss in over two years but they still occupy pole position in the table. Coach Duncan Meehan was recently named as the Merseyside Sports Partnership coach of the year in recognition of the outstanding success of the side.

Park continue to celebrate their 140th anniversary season and there is a reunion lunch prior to this week’s National Three North fixture against Penrith.

The lunch is being held for all those who helped celebrate the Park Centenary season 40 years ago. Park will be hoping to lay on a performance worthy of the occasion after a welcome week off.

Captain Chris Jones said: “We will be looking to put on an improved display after some patchy form and the break has enabled us to put in some quality work on the training pitch.”

Kick-off is 2.15pm at the Upper Park.

The culmination of the 140th season will be the summer tour to the Caribbean, and Park will play against the national sides of Barbados and Trinidad as well as taking on the Rastafarian outfit Rainbow in south Trinidad.
