Caldy RUFC just miss out in 24-20 loss at Luctonians

CALDY were unfortunate to not take more than the one bonus point from their National Two North encounter at Luctonians with decisions not going their way as well as a number of key errors when they were in a good field position

Caldy were first on the scoreboard when Gavin Roberts kicked a penalty.

Luctonians scored the game’s first try when a well-worked move saw full-back Jimmy Norris score in the corner.

Luctonians scored againthree minutes later when wing Charles Meredith benefited from a break through the middle. John Morris added the conversion

Caldy lost JJ Dickinson with a dead leg after 18 minutes, replaced by Jon Sewell who had a fine game. Shortly after, Ben Eaves charged down a clearance kick from Luctonians and full-back Ben MacPherson scored in the corner. Roberts converted from the touch line.

Luctonians were reduced to 13 men but Caldy failed to take advantage of the numerical supremacy to leave the half-time score 12-10 to the hosts.

Luctonians started the better in the second-half and scored following a turnover in the Caldy 22 when Meredith got his second try in the corner.

On 53 minutes, a rolling maul saw hooker Neil Dowridge touch down.

Thirteen minutes later, Luctonians wing Will Hodnett scored another try from a mistake by Caldy to leave the scores at 24-15.

Caldy dominated the last 15 minutes as Derek Salisbury scored a try.

In the last five minutes, Caldy were awarded four successive penalties from a lineout on the Luctonians five metre line but were not given a penalty try or any yellow cards to the offenders and Caldy were denied the victory losing 24-20.
