THE Leigh forwards laid the foundation for this victory giving their team the majority of the possession and territory.
In the final analysis, though, it was the goal kicking of centre Tom Forshaw – who scored 13 points – which was the difference between the sides as both teams scored four tries.
Playing against the wind, Leigh took an early lead with two penalties before Danny Harvey scored for the hosts but this was cancelled out by a Calvin Crompton try from short range for Leigh.
The lead changed hands again before the break with Wirral scoring tries via Craig Harvey and Ollie Atkinson to leave the score 17-11 in Wirral’s favour.
With wind advantage in the second-half, Leigh made use of the conditions to secure territory and three further tries through Steve Millard, Adam Dyson and Calvin Crompton giving Leigh a winning lead of 33-17.
However, in the final minutes Wirral mounted a spirited attack, rewarded with a bonus point try through the tireless Robbie Pearl.
