IF West Park thought that gaining the double was going to be easy, the Ormskirk pack had other ideas.
Well marshalled by their Aussie prop Hirsimaki they took a five point lead after a stalemate first half hour - flanker Mark Rothwell breaking from a close in maul to score in the corner.
Still lacking good ball from the set scrums Park were stung into reply and after having a forward pass denying their opening try, the sinbinning of visitors’ prop Gately proved decisive as Matt Potter charged down a hasty clearance kick to level the scores.
In the absence of regular kicker Warren Hunt, injured in a training accident in midweek, his stand in Ben Robinson's conversion attempt was wide and half time arrived with the scores level.
Ormskirk's tactics on the resumption were clear; keep the ball away from the home backs by dominating the scrums, mauls and rucks and smothering Park’s backs.
Centres Matt Cozens and Sean Sparrow had other ideas and prompted by half backs Rob Hitchmough and Danny Green they began to find holes in the Kirk midfield,Cozens finally bursting through one large gap to cross the line followed by Sparrow who used his pace to score the third try converted by Ben Robinson for a 17-5 lead.
The bonus point try came in the closing minutes by winger Lee Rosney, the stalwart’s display by the visitor's pack getting no rewards for their efforts.
Next Saturday West Park face the difficult task of visiting unbeaten league leaders Sale FC with a 2-15 kick off.
