Caldy RUFC get 2012 off to a flying start with victory over Lymm

CALDY came from behind to start 2012 on a winning note against combative visitors from Lymm.

Caldy produced a workmanlike performance on Monday afternoon to eventually overcome resilient visitors, whose approach caused problems early on.

Lymm deservedly took a 10-7 lead into half-time, but after the break, Caldy took control of proceedings and eventually won by 31-22, scoring five tries in the process.

It was excellent to see a number of squad players getting their first appearance of the season in the first XV and performing well in difficult windy conditions.

Head coach Stuart Turner was pleased with the performance.

“It was a good performance against a strong Lymm team, and good to get a run out after the Christmas period,” he declared.

“It was also an ideal opportunity to see some younger players, at a higher standard, some new players, and also get back to winning ways.”

Caldy started the game well and had good territory but were unable to turn their possession into points.

A speculative chip by the Lymm fly-half and pressure from the outside backs led to a fumble which was capitalised on by Lymm winger Williamson who raced over the line.

The conversion was missed.

James Smith scored a typical try, powering over the line from short range after good work by the Caldy forwards, to get Caldy back into the game, but just before half-time Lymm re-took their lead when some slick handling by the Lymm backs led to winger Matt Barnes-Smith sprinting clear of the defenders to score out wide.
