CALDY overcame a tough Otley side at Cross Green with a four-try bonus point win by 35-20, despite being reduced to 13 men at one stage of the game and having three players sent to the sin in the first 20 minutes of the second half.
Gareth Bansor was outstanding in another excellent back row performance and Andrew Barnish capped off his first start of the season with a try and the man of the match award.
Otley were first to get on the scoreboard after a penalty kick from James Twomey but Caldy hit straight back with a long range drop goal from John Broxson after nine minutes. Three minutes later, a good break from Andrew Barnish saw him draw the full back before passing to the supporting Josiah Dickinson who got his 11th try of the season. Soutar converted.
Otley then drew level after some poor tackling in the Caldy defensive line but Soutar kicked two penalties on 23 and 33 minutes to give Caldy a deserved half-time lead of 16-10.
Otley started the second half much the better side, their cause helped after firstly Shaun Woof and then James Smith were sent for a 10-minute rest after only a few minutes of the half. Otley did manage to score a try in this period when full-back Ben Collins found space to dart in between two defenders but Twomey missed the fairly simply conversion to leave the scores 16-15.
Derek Salisbury was sent to the bin for a further offence but Caldy took control of the game. Barnish found space out wide after 64 minutes to touch down for Caldy and on 71 minutes Soutar followed, with a try of his own.
Sam Russell scored his first try for Caldy first XV on 79 minutes, to secure the bonus point.
The scoring was completed with the last play of the game when Otley winger Curtis Wilson scored a well deserved try.
This coming weekend, Caldy face fourth-placed Huddersfield at home (kick off 2.15pm).
