AT around 6pm last Saturday, LSH president Ray French disposed of one last empty chip carton and reflected on one of the busiest and most enthralling days seen at Moss Lane for some time.

“What a day,” he said. “We’ve parked up four buses and heaven knows how many cars; nearly 150 youngsters have been playing since 11 this morning and since then they’ve eaten us out of house and home. Oh yes, we’ve also beaten Northwich.”

The tireless French was referring to a day on which the LSH mini/juniors hosted a visit from mini junior teams from Wetherby Rugby Club.

The crucial North One West clash against Northwich was also preceded by a curtain-raiser between LSH and Harrogate U14s.

LSH’s 24-18 win over nearest promotion rivals Northwich leaves them seven points clear, and eight points above Widnes.

“This is what it is all about,” said French.

“The lads played well on Saturday, particularly keeping possession and putting some good moves together. We’re in the mix again, just as in the last two years and it’s great for the fans and great for the team. It’s in our hands now.”
