THIS relegation issue game was in the balance until the 79th minute when Wirral fly half, James Annetts crossed over for a well taken try to extend Wirral’s lead to 23-15.
With a strengthened side Wirral were anxious to achieve a win but fell behind to an early Bob McCallum penalty, before taking the lead with two well executed tries by Dan Harvey, the second from a superbly weighted but delayed pass which split the Wilmslow defence and left Dan with a run to the line, this try being converted by brother, Craig, who later added a penalty.
Wilmslow’s forwards mauled their way over for a try which left the half time score at 15-8 and it was Wilmslow who played with greater determination in the second before Craig Harvey extended Wirral’s lead with a penalty.
There followed periods of pressure from Wilmslow leading to a penalty try to make it 18-15, and the final 14 minutes were played with great tension but it was that final try which sealed the victory, which Wirral deserved for their commitment.
