Rugby union: Landashire Trophy triumph boosts Wids hopes

WIDNES captured the Lancashire Trophy at Tyldesley on Easter Monday, beating giant killers Littleborough by 19-9.

The Rochdale-based side gave Widnes a torrid time for an hour or so, but tries from Andy Riley, Phil Glover and Kevin Leadbetter – who also kicked two conversions – eventually got them home.

It’s back to North One West action for Widnes on Saturday, when they take on Liverpool St Helens at Heath Road (3pm).

With Sandbach already promoted as champions, the race for second place goes on, and with both teams as well as Northwich still in the mix for the play-off spot, a terrific game looks in prospect. Head Coach Lee McDermott knows that LSH will be very dangerous opponents indeed, particularly as their opponents will still be smarting after their heaviest home defeat for four years to Widnes back in December.

Since then, it has been nip and tuck between the two sides as they both scramble for that second place finish.
