Liverpool St Helens set to launch women’s team

LIVERPOOL ST HELENS are set to continue their expansion this season with the launch of their open age Women’s Rugby Team.

The first training session is scheduled for Wednesday, August 8at the club’s Moss Lane ground and newly appointed LSH Women’s Rugby Coordinator, Peter Morrissey says that everyone is welcome to come and give rugby a try.

“Rugby is a game for all shapes and sizes and it doesn’t matter if you haven’t played before as our coaching team will soon have you up to speed,” she said. “Rugby provides a brilliant way to get fit and make new friends for life. Our U15s and U18s Girls have gone from strength to strength and recently toured the South of France and where they were introduced to Jonny Wilkinson so I believe the Women’s Team will also be a huge success.”

There are currently over 13,500 women playing rugby across 533 clubs in the country and participation has increased by a remarkable 87% since 2004. This is a trend that looks set to increase in the run up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2014 and the Men’s World Cup here in England in 2015.

The new LSH Women’s team will play at least eight friendly fixtures this season before joining the North West League in 2013.

LSH Chairman John Bithell feels that the development was the culmination of a lot of hard work within the club.

“The Women’s Team could be viewed as the final piece in the jig-saw giving us a full complement of teams from U7s right through to our Senior Men’s XVs, as well as Girls U15s and U18s. Everyone at the club is very excited to welcome the new Women’s Team to the LSH family.”
