CALDY fell to their third successive defeat away against a strong Leicester Lions side, who produced some of their best rugby of the season so far. Caldy struggled to cope with the Midlanders throughout the game but will take heart again from their second half performance which was a huge improvement on the first.
Leicester were first to score with a well taken penalty for Jon Boden after Caldy strayed offside. Rich Vasey hit back for Caldy three minutes later with a well taken drop goal. Leicester Lions then scored through a penalty try after Caldy were unable to deal with the power of the Lions scrum. Boden again converted. Rich Vasey reduced the arrears with a penalty on 19 minutes to leave the scores 10-6. The Lions were again awarded another penalty try by in similar circumstances to the first which Boden again converted. Caldy collected the ball from the kick off and made good ground through Matt Van Sertima, but a turnover ball saw Leicester number 8 Gibbons break clear and he then drew the defender and Collins scored out wide. Boden converted again. Leicester finished the half in style with a try on the opposite wing for Gibbons after excellent phase play. The half time score stood at 29-6 to Lions.
After the break, Caldy were vastly improved and Gavin Roberts (left) scored a great individual try under the posts after a good pass from Dom Kohler. Vasey converted. Leicester Lions scored two further tries through Collins and Lowdon, one on each wing, to increase the home side’s lead. Caldy tried the best to breach the Leicester line but their good defence held firm.
Next weekend, Caldy are at home against third placed Darlington Mowden Park who have only lost one game all season (kick off 3pm). Please come along and support the side.
