Wirral rue missed opportunity

A BELOW par performance by Wirral allowed Wilmslow to take the initiative and score a bonus point win, with the away team almost scoring in the last minute to draw the game.

In the first 20 minutes there was a flurry of points, with the home team Wilmslow scoring two unconverted tries and a penalty against a converted try and two penalties to leave the score at 13-all. Each side scored a further try before half time, which included a spectacular individual try by James Annetts from 80m to leave the score 18-all.

The second half saw both teams looking to play open rugby but the game was settled in the space of five minutes with two converted tries from Wilmslow, one of which was a penalty try for a scrum infringement. In the final 10 minutes Wirral improved their game, firstly with a 75m converted try from Ali Baker to leave the Wirral side one score down.

In the last minute a Wirral pass just failed to go to hand, which if scored and converted would have left the two teams tied.
