David Moyes’s side were full of confidence having won at holders Chelsea in the previous round. But a desperate performance meant a strike from Reading skipper Matt Mills was enough to put the npower Championship side through.

Feb 2008 Everton 1-0 Reading (Premier League)

Phil Jagielka's first league goal for Everton inflicted a seventh straight defeat on Reading and edged the Royals nearer the drop. Jagielka scored the winner with a looping header while Leon Osman struck the crossbar and James Harper hit the post for the visitors.

Jan 2007 Everton 1-1 Reading (Premier League)

With Sylvester ‘Rocky Balboa’ Stallone in the crowd, Moyes’s men failed to land the knockout blow as they were held by the Royals. The visitors took the lead when Hunt’s effort took a double deflection off Howard and Joleon Lescott before Andrew Johnson’s late equaliser.

Oct 1974 Everton 1-0 Reading (League Cup round two)

Billy Bingham’s side were struggling for form at the beginning of the season but managed to sidestep a potential banana skin against their Division Four opponents. It was a struggle, but Mick Buckley scored the only goal to earn a home tie against Norwich City.

Mar 1931 Everton 3-2 Reading (Division Two)

The last of 14 consecutive victories that helped Everton earn promotion back to the top flight and reach the FA Cup semi-final. James Dunn, Ted Critchley and Tommy Johnson were on target for Everton.
