Wirral RUFC recover to maintain winning run

WIRRAL continued their unbeaten 2013 record with a seventh consecutive win but had to come back from a 12-5 deficit to maintain their record.

Whilst Altrincham Kersal (AK) started the stronger using their speedy wings it was Wirral who scored first as James Annetts outpaced the defence to score.

Over the next 20 minutes AK hit back with two well taken tries through wingers Tony O’Connor and Jack Wise and a conversion to lead 12-5.

Wirral continued to press, though, as two Craig Harvey penalties reduced the deficit to 12-11.

Against the wind in the second half, Wirral continued to apply pressure and the breakthrough came when captain Harvey probed the opposition back line and from 15m out powered over under the posts, which he duly converted.

The final 20 minutes were full of tension as both teams strove for the next score but Wirral were able to ride out the storm to achieve a win which sees them climb to fifth in the league.
