Rugby union: Widnes thrash Fleetwood

Widnes 38Fleetwood 0

WIDNES got back to winning ways when they beat basement side Fleetwood in a poor game at Heath Road.

They were on the score sheet after just five minutes when Paul O’Connor crossed, and two more tries mid-way through the half from Arnie Haydock and Gareth Riley, along with three Kevin Leadbetter conversions saw them leading 21-0 at the break.

Widnes were always in control and further tries from O’Connor, Matty Smith and Haydock again along with another conversion from Leadbetter, wrapped up their first league win in four attempts.

Widnes will be hoping to build on their win when they travel up the M62 to face Rochdale at Moorgate Avenue on saturday (3pm).

Representative rugby will be coming to Heath Road on Sunday 14th April, kick off 2.15pm, when Lancashire U17’s play Yorkshire U17’s.

LSH entertain Sale FC this Saturday in a clash will have a massive bearing on this season’s title.

Coach Martin Jones said: “Sale have some fine players. I will simply ask my lads to keep on doing what they do well and work hard for 80 minutes. The result will take care of itself.”
